Flagship Scholars

Change a Life

The Flagship Scholars program aims to provide access to Missouri's flagship university with four-year, $15,000 scholarships in every county of Missouri. Priority goes to students who are the first in their families to attend college, who demonstrate outstanding service and leadership and who have financial need. Recipients receive full tuition and fees as well as funding for other educational expenses, such as room, board and books.

Change a Community

Flagship Scholars give back at least 20 hours a year by promoting higher education. Thus, they become ambassadors in their home communities for MU and for college enrollment. Such peer-to-peer contact works. The more frequently high school students or high school graduates come into contact with peers who have college plans, the more likely they are to consider similar paths.

Change Missouri

Many Missourians think that earning college degrees is beyond their reach. In more than half of the counties in Missouri, fewer than 12 percent of adults hold college degrees. But University of Missouri Flagship Scholars can change that, and doing so could have a profound impact on the state. One economic theory estimates that for every 1 percent increase in the proportion of the population holding college degrees, there is a nearly 2 percent increase in the wages of workers without degrees.

You can help

Donors have funded Flagship Scholarships in six counties — Andrew, Audrain, Caldwell, Clark, Marion and Wright — and MU is working to identify partners and supporters to help award more scholarships in fall 2011.

  • A gift of $300,000 funds the awarding of a four-year scholarship every four years.
  • A gift of $1.2 million funds the awarding of a four-year scholarship every year.
