Jefferson Club welcomes MU supporters for a night of celebration and recognition

Thomas Jefferson Distinguished Visiting Lecturer Major Garrett, BJ ’84, BS Political Science ’84, spoke at the 42nd Annual Jefferson Club Dinner on April 28, 2012, at the Reynolds Alumni Center.

Each spring, MU Jefferson Club members gather in Columbia for a night of friendship, nostalgia, recognition and celebration of philanthropic generosity to the University of Missouri. At this year’s 42nd annual Jefferson Club Dinner, Roger Steinbecker, the national chair of the Jefferson Club Board of Trustees, welcomed 322 guests from as far away as California and Florida to the black-tie cocktail reception, dinner and celebration.

Major Garrett, BJ ’84, BS Political Science ’84, was this year’s 2012 Thomas Jefferson Distinguished Visiting Lecturer. Garrett provided the entertainment for the evening discussing his unlikely career path and his experiences as a journalist.

According to Susan Lowry, executive director of Donor Relations at MU, “this was one of our most successful dinners ever.  Major did a wonderful job engaging our audience plus the festivities, the food, the weather and the University Club all added up to a wonderful evening.  I hope our donors feel appreciated and able to share in all Mizzou’s successes.”

Prior to the dinner, members were invited to the new member convocation at Jesse Hall. Chancellor Brady J. Deaton and Mrs. Anne Deaton gathered with Jefferson Club Trustees to congratulate and recognize new and upgrading Jefferson Club Members.

The Jefferson Club was established in 1970 with 12 alumni. By the end of the year, they had increased their membership to 42 and had raised $1 million to support the University. Today, the Jefferson Club boasts nearly 4,000 member households across the United States. In addition, 7,902 Jefferson Club members have contributed more than $763 million to MU since its beginnings. Members help shape the University for today’s scholars and tomorrow’s leaders.

Membership in the Jefferson Club is open to MU alumni, friends and MU-affiliated nonprofit organizations. For more information about the Jefferson Club, please contact Ashlee Smith at smithap@missouri.edu or 573-884-9110.
